C.T.E: Common in Wounded Soldiers, Injured Athletes and Injured Accident Victims

A recent study performed during the autopsies of four young veterans suggests that the long term consequences of the traumatic brain injuries suffered by soldiers in combat are very similar to those suffered by football players and motor vehicle accidents victims.

The nydailynews.com reveals that the brains of these young soldiers showed the early stages of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The dead soldiers' brain tissue was subsequently compared to that of very young athletes (in their teens and twenties) with similar injuries, which showed that the abnormalities resulting from their injuries were nearly identical.

Typical Injury

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is a progressive disease caused by multiple concussions. Recent press reports link it to the untimely deaths of professional football players and lawsuits filed by their descendants and others against the National Football League.

Traumatic brain injuries are considered the hallmark injuries of soldiers returning from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and prevalent among these injuries is chronic traumatic encephalopathy. These injuries typically occur when insurgents attack military convoys by detonating Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) by the side of the road. The shockwaves produced by these powerful explosions (usually artillery ordinance rigged to a cellphone so as to allow attackers to detonate them from a distance), travel though the soldiers' helmets and heads, making the brain bounce back and forth inside the skull and causing lasting injuries. The process is repeated as the soldier gets thrown against objects inside the vehicle (dashboard, side columns, etc.) or gets thrown out of the vehicle, subsequently hitting the road, a wall or some other object.

Many soldiers recover from their injuries. However, a large number never do. Unfortunately, some cannot deal with the lingering effects of these traumas (memory loss, disorientation, headaches, etc.) and end up taking their own lives.

Car Accident Victims Too

The same is true for some professional athletes (like football players) and for motor vehicle accident victims. Much like soldiers traveling in their vehicles, passengers in a regular family car get thrown against objects inside the vehicle or ejected from the car altogether (often because they are not wearing their seat belts) and end up hitting the road, a wall or some other object, like a light pole. Please note that although it is unlikely that someone in our roads will die as a result of an improvised explosive device being detonated by the side of the road, the forces generated by a motor vehicle accident, specially one with, for example, a large tractor trailer, can be as devastating as those produced by a roadside explosion. At least, I would venture, the military vehicles in which our troops travel are stronger and better equipped and our troops themselves are wearing helmets and other safety devices that are not available to our average family car passenger.
