InnerSpace Neuro, Inc., a pioneer in the research and development of products to treat traumatic brain injuries, has released an abstract featuring its new tunneled catheter at the Neurotrauma 2012 meeting in Phoenix, Arizona.
Typically Deadly Brain Swelling
Brain swelling is one of the most deadly consequences of traumatic brain injuries. Typically, the brain cells in the area surrounding the impact die. As they do, they release toxic substances that cause the brain to swell. As the brain swells within the limited confines of the skull, the veins and arteries that carry blood (and thus, the oxygen essential to life) are constricted and the flow stops. This lack of oxygen causes the death of more cells, beginning a vicious circle that doctors must stop for the patient to survive.
In past posts we have talked about how researchers are using a microcomputer vacuum pump to siphon out those deadly chemical substances before they kill more cells. InnerSpace's new invention is about placing the catheter (that may be connected to a microcomputer vacuum pump) in the precise location of the injury.
According to Dr. Howard Yonas, M.D., the scientist from the University of New Mexico who carried out the 209 procedures performed during the clinical study in which this technique was tested, "brain access provided by the SynergyDuo Ventricular is critical to ensuring a fixed spatial relationship between the probes with consistent placement in the brain's deep frontal white matter". This means that the new catheter allows doctors to place it right on the spot where the dead brain cells that need to be extracted are.
Traumatic Brain Injuries and Car Accidents
Car accidents are a very common cause of traumatic brain injuries. Typically, the occupants of a regular family car that are not wearing their seat belts get thrown against objects inside the vehicle or ejected from the car altogether, subsequently hitting the road, a wall or some other object, like a light pole. Considering the devastating forces generated by a motor vehicle accident, especially those with larger vehicles like large tractor trailers, persistent messages encouraging people to wear their seat belts are not surprising. Neither is the fact that wearing a seatbelt is the law in most states. The only good traumatic brain injury is the one that never occurs...
Of course, seat belts alone cannot prevent all traumatic brain injuries caused in motor vehicle accidents from occurring. Thankfully scientists continuously try to come up with treatments that like the one described above can help save the victims of these devastating injuries. However, these treatments are not cheap. And if the injuries were caused in an accident in which someone else was responsible, maybe we can help.
