Plane Accident Kills Nine People from South Florida

Our Miami aircraft disaster lawyers discuss a plane accident that occurred in Ohio recently and claimed the lives of nine individuals from the South Florida area. The chartered plane departed from Fort Lauderdale, and stopped in St. Paul, Minnesota and Moline, Illinois before landing in Cincinnati, Ohio. The plane then departed from Cincinnati and stopped in Dayton. As it approached the Akron Fulton International airport, it suddenly crashed. The 10 seat plane hit utility wires and the left wing hit the ground before crashing into a four unit apartment building, sparking a fire that burned down the building. Fortunately, no one was home in any of the buildings. Sadly, everyone aboard the plane perished in the crash. Plane crash victims include two executives and five employees from Pebb Enterprises, a real estate development company based out of Boca Raton.

Investigators are now trying to determine the cause of the fatal crash that has left the local community reeling. The National Transportation Safety Board recovered the cockpit voice recorder from the crash which revealed that the pilots did not radio for help prior to crashing.

The Causes of Plane Accidents

It is highly uncommon for large, commercial planes to crash, but small planes are involved in accidents at far higher rates. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, 440 people were killed in small plane crashes in 2012. There are several causes of small plane crashes. One major factor is the level of experience of the pilot. While commercial plane pilots must meet stringent training and hours in the air requirements, small plane pilots have more lenient licensing requirements. Small plane pilots will thus often lack the experience and training of commercial pilots. The airport conditions also vary widely between international airports and smaller plane airports. Small airports may lack paved runways and smooth landing conditions.

It is unclear at this time the degree of experience of the pilots involved in this Ohio accident. The plane that crashed was a medium sized aircraft that seated 10, but this is no indication of the pilot's experience level.

Plane Accident Claims

Plane crashes are uncommon, but when they do occur the results can be tragic. Those involved in a plane crash can become seriously injured. Many will die given the force involved and the fires that often breakout as a plane collides with the ground or an object.

The victims of plane crashes and their loved ones may be eligible to seek compensation for their tremendous losses caused by the crash. Plane accident claims can be complex and are subject to numerous limitations. Federal law provides aircraft manufacturers with immunity when older planes are involved in accidents. Insurance coverage can also be an issue if a small plane is involved in the crash. Consult with a personal injury attorney as soon as possible after the crash to explore your legal rights.
