Tractor Trailer Crash Traps Driver as Truck Leaks Chlorine on Highway

Recently, a tractor trailer overturned on Interstate 75 in Weston. The driver became trapped inside the cab of the truck as it lay on its side. Broward firefighters were able to cut open the roof of the cab and free the driver. Though the rescue took approximately two hours, the 52 year old driver was eventually freed and transported via helicopter to the hospital. Two other cars were involved in the accident, but fortunately they were not seriously injured. Investigators believe one of the cars changed lanes, forcing the truck driver to swerve out of the way and collide with another car. The truck was carrying chlorine at the time of the accident and it leaked onto the highway. All parties exposed to the chemical had to be decontaminated and the highway was closed for some time.

Truck Accidents Can Result in Serious Injuries

Commercial trucks can weigh upwards of 80,000 pounds, or even more, while the average passenger motor vehicle weighs in at about 3,000 pounds. Due to the sheer size disparity between commercial trucks and passenger motor vehicles, combined with the basic laws of physics, any accident between a tractor trailer and a smaller vehicle will likely result in serious injury or even death to those inside the car.

Human Error is the Most Common Cause of Truck Accidents

Human error is considered to be the number one cause of tractor trailer accidents. Negligence can be on behalf of the truck driver or the driver of the car involved. Potential negligent actions include speeding, distraction, driver fatigue, driving while intoxicated, disobeying basic traffic laws, and much more. The drivers of cars may act in a negligent manner if they pass trucks when it is not safe to do so, fail to leave adequate room between themselves and the truck, or disregard blind spots.

Injured Truck Accident Victims May Be Entitled to Compensation

If you have been injured in a truck accident, you may be entitled to receive compensation for your damages stemming from the accident. This could include coverage for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, ongoing disability, and much more. Contact a lawyer as soon as possible after the accident to protect your legal rights.
