Norwegian news outlets have reported that an Italian woman recently went overboard near Flam, Norway while aboard the Costa Fortuna cruise ship. The 52 year old woman apparently went after a violent episode with another person aboard the ship. She plummeted some 30 to 35 meters down to the water below. Emergency responders quickly pulled her out of the water, but she suffered critical injuries and was unconscious when retrieved. A witness to the incident reports that the woman screamed before going overboard. News sources have not clarified whether she was a passenger or crew member
Recently, a 21 year old Virginia Tech student fell overboard while on a spring break Caribbean cruise. The young student, a senior majoring in engineering, went missing off the Carnival Glory ship on Sunday, March 8, just a day after the ship set sail. The student and several of his friends departed on the seven day cruise out of Miami during their university's spring break.
Yahoo News reported that "Authorities were conducting an air and marine search Thursday off Australia's east coast for two cruise passengers who were believed to have fallen overboard" the Carnival Spirit the night before. The search was called off on Friday.
